Evaluation of occupants’ responses and use of different types of lighting control systems for efficient use of energy in office buildings

Modern lighting controls can contribute to energy saving in buildings, but it is important that they function in a human friendly way.  This means that the occupants understand the purpose of the lighting controls and that they are satisfied with the systems.  The study aims to determine the occupants’ response to different types of lighting controls together with effects of human behavior on energy use within an office environment.  The study will evaluate the different types of lighting controls and examine behavior and experiences in relation to the control systems.  The results of the occupants’ responses and behavior will be compared to the energy use in the office.  Furthermore, the obtained knowledge of this study can be used to improve lighting condition and reduce the energy use at the same time, and give guidelines for lighting installations in office environments.

Design features supporting sustainable energy use – The case of human interaction with lighting control devices

Human behavior is the major factor affecting the energy use of lighting in the built environment.  Since factors such as the perception of the environment or objects may guide human behavior, the perception of lighting objects may have impacts on the change of behavior towards energy saving.  The study aims to identify basic design features of lighting control devices that can trigger optimal use and promote energy saving behavior, focusing on the design of manual lighting control devices and how the devices communicate with users in public environments.  The study will be conducted in the laboratory and the field in public buildings.  The field study will assess users’ behavior as well as measure energy use in the selected spaces.  The obtained results will be used to identify the design features of lighting control devices which are the important features for energy use efficiency.  The outcome of the study will also be used to conclude guidelines for a prototype of lighting control interface.
